I sort of know this problem - I once had my IME reufse to turn kaisha into, well, 会社. I was like 'what the hell' because it came out of nowhere and I had no idea WHY. But there was a way around it... it's a bit complicated, but...Have you tried cheating? As in, you 'teach' your IME a 'new' word? There's an Add Word or Entry button. Click on it and you have "reading" where you can enter e.g. かなしい and then for 'display' either trick your IME into displaying the kanji (by e.g. typing 悲鳴, erasing the 鳴 and adding しい) or copypaste it from an online source. This works if your IME is acting up for two, three words, but if it's more, this gets frustrating... I would be at my wit's ends in that case, throw a tantrum and... hope it will go back to normal? Sorry I can't be of much help!

One other issue issue is that video games can be serious anyway with the most important focus on knowing things rather than fun. Although, it has an entertainment aspect to keep your sons or daughters engaged, just about every game is normally designed to focus on a specific expertise or programs, such as mathmatical or scientific discipline. Thanks for your write-up.
